Foods Academy Ideas
The Academy class is about
taking capable students and allowing them to experience new recipes/ techniques
and tastes. We will try things that extend the students knowledge, minds and
stomachs.
But remember, the ultimate
goal is to produce wonderful food for others! The joy and appreciation
you get from feeding others is what I want you to experience.
Note: being in Academy, may
mean that you are not a priority for the extension classes, especially if you
were in an extension class last year.
We will need about 15-17
lessons (every Wednesday 10.40- 12.15pm+).
Bring a container, an open
mind and a curious stomach.

Apple cake
Ingredients
·
3 - 4 Apples (any tasty kind will do!)
·
3/4 Tablespoon of Cinnamon
·
3/4 Tablespoons of Sugar
·
1 & 1/2 Cups flour
·
1/2 Tablespoon of baking powder
·
1/2 teaspoon of salt
·
1/2 cup of vegetable oil
·
1 cup of sugar
·
1/4 cup of juice from an orange
·
1 & 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
·
2 eggs
·
1 cup chopped assorted nuts (optional)
Method
1. Preheat oven to
180 Degrees Celcius
2. Butter or oil a
cake tin
3. Remove skin and
cores from the apples. Chop up apples into small cubes and place in a container
with a lid
4. Sprinkle
Cinnamon and 3/4 Tablespoon of sugar over apples & put the lid on the
container then lightly shake it until the apples are coated. Set aside.
5. Sift flour,
baking powder, sugar and salt into a mixing bowl.
6. In a separate
bowl mix oil, orange juice, sugar, vanilla and eggs. Mix well.
7. Add wet
ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix together lightly until mixed well.
8. Add half of the
container of apples into the mixture and mix lightly. Also add assorted nuts if
you are using these.
9. Pour the
mixture into the prepared cake tin.
10. With the
remaining apples, sprinkle these on top of the cake.
11. Evenly pour the
remaining juices from the apple container - this gives the cake more moisture
and sweetness.
12. Bake at 180c
for around 40 minutes or until a tester comes out clean.
13. Serve hot with
ice cream, or even amazing to eat on its own!
